Leaving the City of Easy
by Amanda Bland, Brad Hull
copyright 2005

Don't underestimate what I'll do, what I've done
Don't touch me with your eyes,
undress my thoughts
and clothe the unwanted parts

I know you think you broke through...

But I'm leaving the City of Easy
leaving the City of Easy
(gonna make it out of town
but if I stop now,
I'll break down)

Just another pretty face without a smile, without a song
I know that I want more
than what you've got
cause baby you're a long shot

(Bridge)
I won't brake for anyone
no one but God
and that's not you
All you're gonna see
is the back of my head
and a dusty blacktop road

Cause I'm leaving the City of Easy
leaving the City of Easy
gonna make it out of town
but if I stop now,
I'll break down
Leaving the City of Easy

I've never been very good at figuring out what metaphorical songs like this mean, but what I get from this song is a general sense of eschewing the negative and shallow and aspiring to better things. I suppose this belongs to a whole genre of "moving on" songs, even though it's not clear whether you're talking about a relationship.

You do some very nice melodic things here, especially at the end of the verses, and the echo-y counterpoint of the background vocals adds a nice depth. Hanging out on the ninth is always cool. In terms of production, there could more layering of guitars perhaps, to get more of the spacious feeling I think you want (like you're hitch-hiking through Texas or some such).

I wonder if you meant to write "I won't brake for anyone..."

Nice song, nice theme.
